{"id":19285,"date":"2024-03-18T23:44:37","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T06:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/?p=19285"},"modified":"2024-03-15T00:45:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T07:45:08","slug":"seguimos-contemporary-art-in-costa-rica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/seguimos-contemporary-art-in-costa-rica\/","title":{"rendered":"Seguimos: Contemporary Art in Costa Rica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Opening March 30<sup>th<\/sup> at Craig Krull Gallery, thirteen Costa Rican artists present <em>Seguimos<\/em>, an exhibition that offers original and vibrant contemporary artwork previously unseen in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>As co-curated by Los Angeles-based gallerist Hannah Sloan and the Craig Krull Gallery, work by Adri\u00e1n Arguedas Ruano, Alina Gonz\u00e1lez, Allegra Pacheco, Christian Wedel, Isaac Lor\u00eda, Javier Calvo, La Cholla Jackson, Luc\u00eda Howell, Luciano Goizueta, Matias Sauter Morera, Mimian Hsu Chen, Priscilla Romero-Cubero and Valiente Pastel explore a wide range of mediums while providing a fresh perspective on subjects such as the body, identity, and place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-648x432.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/02.PriscillaRomero_Cubero-288x192.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Video, photography, and installations are joined by paintings, works on paper, and free-standing sculptures. <em>Seguimos<\/em>, which translates as \u201cwe keep going\u201d takes its name from an exhibited installation that features some 120 works on paper by conceptual artist Priscilla Romero-Cubero.<\/p>\n<p>Romero-Cubero registered liquid latex imprints of fingers \u2013 those of dozens of individuals. The imprints are positioned in groupings of four and marked with the slashes of diagonal tally marks. What is being tallied is a harsh statistic revealing the continued counting of the disappeared and silenced, victims of death and injustice. Thematically, this piece, and the overall exhibition, shape a powerful testimony to unforgettable lives and memory.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"951\" height=\"633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image003.jpg 951w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image003-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image003-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image003-648x431.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image003-288x192.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 951px) 100vw, 951px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The personal and the political are both intrinsic to the exhibition. Javier Calvo\u2019s \u201cEl Blanco es Relativo\u201d (\u201cWhite is Relative\u201d) focuses on racial stereotype with an image of Calvo\u2019s arm, on which these words are tattooed. The pointed message behind them relates to a racial stereotype in a country that is often incorrectly generalized as being non-white.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Morphing her own nude figure within mirrored fragments and the landscape of Costa Rica itself, artist Lucia Howell shapes video art that infuses a symbolic magic into a world that exudes the mystery of a mythological realm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19297\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez-755x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez-755x1024.jpg 755w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez-768x1041.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez-648x879.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez-142x192.jpg 142w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/11.AlinaGonzalez.jpg 944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Body image is also at the core of works from Alina Gonz\u00e1lez that serve as a reflection of identity as a transgender woman. The artist and documentarian\u2019s work is suffused with energy and vigilant fierceness.<\/p>\n<p>La Cholla Jackson presents a gritty and absorbing assemblage, shaping fashionable stiletto heels and pumped sneakers into a large-scale sculpture that reimagines high fashion through the lens of her own drag performances.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition traverses the terrain of geographic bodies as well as those of the human form. Mimian Hsu Chen creates her own sculptural work recontextualizing items of clothing and adornment as a 26-foot \u201cwaterfall\u201d of diaphanous fabric sewn with embroidery, beads, and pearls. This textile work represents the seaweed and algae that drifts between the countries of Costa Rica and Taiwan, flotsam with no conception of political boundaries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/07.MatiasSauterMorera-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/07.MatiasSauterMorera-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"432\" painter Isaac Loria (below) offers light-filled fecund images painted al fresco on unstretched canvases that capture the lush beauty of his grandfather\u2019s remote farm, the location where he paints.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/12.IsaacLoria.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19298\" his hometown.<\/p>\n<p>And Luciano Goizueta (below)\u00a0 brings the video project, \u201cColecci\u00f3n de Ahoras\/Collection of Nows\u201d to the gallery, a luminous work that reflects brief incidental moments in the life of a Costa Rican artist.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/15.LucianoGoizueta.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" belief that art, landscape, and humankind each shape a passionate commitment to the idea that \u201cwe continue.\u201d It is an exhibition both as deeply devoted to the soul as it is to each of these bodies.<\/p>\n<p><em>Seguimos <\/em>will be on view March 30 through May 18, 2024. The artist reception runs from 4:30 to 6:30 on the 30<sup>th<\/sup>, with several of the participating artists taking part in an artist talk at 3 p.m., prior to the opening reception.
