With an exciting exhibition of works by Ramiro Gomez and David Feldman, presented in association with the Charlie James Gallery, and an\u00a0interactive, site-specific theater piece,\u00a0<em>Se\u00f1or Plummer\u2019s Final Fiesta,<\/em>\u00a0as centerpieces, there\u2019s no lack of fantastic arts events in the program,\u00a0which is presented with the support of the City of West Hollywood\u2019s \u00a0WeHo Arts\u00a0 program.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">On Wednesday the 23rd, <em>WeHo Artes<\/em> events kick off with the opening reception for <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In West Hollywood, <\/em>t<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">he work of Gomez and Feldman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>In West Hollywood <\/em>is not Gomez&#8217; first project with the city of West Hollywood. In 2012, the artist worked on <em>Install: WeHo<\/em>, an LGBTQ pop-up art village that included the artist&#8217;s creation of large cardboard cut-outs that included movers, a couch, and a valet. Even before his official collaboration with the city, Gomez had made visual waves placing cardboard cut-out figures around West Hollywood, art focusing on the &#8220;invisible&#8221; workers such as gardeners. After installation, Gomez left the pieces where they were placed, symbols of the forgotten work of domestic laborers. A West Hollywood resident, the artist is well known for addressing immigration issues, and illuminating the domestic labor forces around Los Angeles. Photographic artist and filmmaker Feldman, his collaborator on the upcoming\u00a0<em>In West Hollywood,\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">documented the cutouts, and these unique photos are a part of the new exhibition. \u00a0Feldman&#8217;s \u00a0<\/span>short film <em>Los Olvidades<\/em>\u00a0covered Ramiro Gomez&#8217;s creation and installation of a work in Arizona&#8217;s Sonoran desert, and was the winner of the Oxford Film Festival in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/weho-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7441\" src=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/weho-1-1024x559.jpg\" alt=\"weho 1\" width=\"648\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/weho-1-1024x559.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/weho-1-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/weho-1-648x354.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/weho-1-352x192.jpg 352w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/weho-1.jpg 1104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>Above: (c) 2015 Ramiro Gomez, \u201cMulholland Drive: On the Road to David\u2019s Studio (after David Hockney\u2019s Mullholland Drive: The Road to the Studio, 1980)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">With Gomez and Feldman&#8217;s work presented together in this new exhibition, the installation serves as a powerful and impactful statement on the influence of Latin America in the culture and art of Los Angeles. Included in the exhibition will be a never-before-seen commissioned painting from Gomez. Adding to the reception celebration is the live music of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, the world\u2019s first LGBTQ mariachi group. The reception and exhibition will be held at the West Hollywood Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Weho3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7445\" src=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Weho3.jpg\" alt=\"Weho3\" width=\"500\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Weho3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Weho3-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Weho3-141x192.jpg 141w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo credit: Otis Woods<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another <em>WeHo Artes<\/em> highlight is the commissioned performance of the\u00a0Rogue Artists Ensemble&#8217;s interactive, site-specific theater performance, <em>Se\u00f1or Plummer\u2019s Final Fiesta.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Using a heady mix of tall-tales, puppets, masks, and music, the play celebrates the 75<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the 1942 book\u00a0<u>Se\u00f1or Plummer: The Life and Laughter of an Old-Californian.<\/u>\u00a0 Written by former\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>\u00a0writer John Preston Buschlen, the book documents interviews with Eugene Plummer, or Don Eugenio, a Spanish-American pioneer whose family once owned 942 acres of land in the area. Considered West Hollywood\u2019s first resident, Don Eugenio is a fascinating, larger than life figure. Rogue Artists will workshop the play with an open rehearsal on\u00a0August 19,\u00a0\u00a0and offer\u00a0performances with full readings, sets and costumes August 24-26th in Plummer Park, \u00a0the site of Don Eugenio\u2019s last residence.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <em>WeHo Artes<\/em> offers other stellar programming as well, with\u00a0PST LA\/LA Getty Foundation-Funded Projects sited in West Hollywood presented by LAND, LAXART,\u00a0ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, and MAK Center for Art and Architecture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/we-ho-8.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7440\" src=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/we-ho-8.jpeg\" alt=\"we ho 8\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/we-ho-8.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/we-ho-8-256x192.jpeg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo credit:\u00a0Sense of Place Artist Render, Estudio Jose D\u00e1vila, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jose D\u00e1vila&#8217;s <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Sense of Place<\/em><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">presented by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">LAND, the Los Angeles Nomadic Division, is a commissioned work by the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Guadalajara-based artist, a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0multi-site, large-scale,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">public sculpture exhibition which invites viewers into an experiential view of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0LA&#8217;s diverse urban landscape. The work paints a portrait of the city\u2019s experiences, geographies, and histories. \u00a0A<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">nine-foot square<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">interactive sculpture made up of 40 unique modular forms will be installed in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">West Hollywood Park, with an opening on September 16th. The sculptural work will be disassembled and reconfigured at three different public sites during the exhibition, which runs through May 2018.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0With each reimagining, scheduled for November, January, and March, \u00a0the piece will take on a changed functional shape. It will return\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">to both its original whole cube shape and the West Hollywood Park location in April 2018. The exhibition will be held at LAXART&#8217;s Santa Monica Blvd. location. The show moves from early video experiments in South America expressing dissent in an era of repressive military regimes, to the ways in which contemporary video artists discuss subjects such as labor, ecology, migration, and issues of identity and the consequences of social inequality. Pieces created between the 1960s and early 1990s include works by LGBTQ and Chicano artists, many of whom passed away due to the AIDS crisis. Over 150 works by 48 Latin American artists challenge nearly 100 years of cultural influence between Latin America and Disney. The exhibition, curated by writer and filmmaker Jesse Lerner and artist\u00a0Rub\u00e9n Ortiz-Torres explores the idea that there are no clean boundaries between art, culture, and geography.
