But underground New York based artist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greghaberny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&q=https:\/\/www.greghaberny.com&source=gmail&ust=1519887882636000&usg=AFQjCNHdghuOQSYBwtjJn_BT-2kV8bojBQ\">Greg Haberny<\/a>\u00a0has made that journey. Stefan saw and was impressed with my work, so he spoke to me about the Bombay Beach project. He really gives artists a voice in a real radical forefront,” Haberny says. “I’m eternally grateful as an artist from New York City to be brought into the desert, something I’d never experienced.”<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5138311098789614539m_6185047394064874929m_-6732215013797340259gmail-m1922928688986967409xxmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">The on-going Bombay Beach installation was developed by Ashkenazy in a way that Haberny says was designed “not to change the aesthetic of the community…to keep the town in a raw aesthetic but raise attention to the Salton Sea, and take an approach similar to that in Marfa, Texas.”<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5138311098789614539m_6185047394064874929m_-6732215013797340259gmail-m1922928688986967409xxmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">For the uninitiated, in the 1970s, minimalist\u00a0artist\u00a0Donald Judd moved to Marfa and\u00a0created giant works of\u00a0art\u00a0that became an integral part of the desert landscape, and led that lonely town to become an art tourism mecca, with minimal commercialization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5138311098789614539m_6185047394064874929m_-6732215013797340259gmail-m1922928688986967409xxmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/petit-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8586\" src=\"http:\/\/diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/petit-9.jpg\" alt=\"petit 9\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/petit-9.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/petit-9-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/petit-9-648x864.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.diversionsla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/petit-9-144x192.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5138311098789614539m_6185047394064874929m_-6732215013797340259gmail-m1922928688986967409xxmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">“The project in Bombay Beach is highly euphoric, and very supportive to the needs of the area,” Haberny says, noting that the region around the sea is already home to the art community of East Jesus in nearby Slab City, and the folk art masterpiece of Salvation Mountain. We did Burning Man, and that was also an inspiration.” According to Ashkenazy, “I was sitting with some people explaining the gypsy concept, which I wanted to bring to the desert during Coachella, but not do something affiliated with it. And as I mentioned my plans, my girlfriend at the time talked about a zombie movie she’d written set in Bombay Beach; another friend had filmed there, and another had a house there. I immediately decided on him, and I handed him the keys to the dumpiest house in shambles.
